Ronny Comstock, the NW La. District Senior Olympics 2018 Coordinator, received the organization’s top individual honor during the celebration that ended the 26th renewal of the activities for those 50 and older.

Comstock was named winner of the Hazel Gay Torch Award, which is named in honor of the woman who played a major role in guiding the organization’s early years. Comstock is in his third year as district coordinator. He succeeds Gary Calligas in the line of Torch winners.

In all, nine award winners were named during the final program held May 29 in the VFW Post 4588 building in Bossier City

Bob Taylor received the Ken Howard’s Spirit Award, named for the late Ken Howard who was known for the spirited way he enjoyed competing in the Senior Olympics and how he helped and encouraged fellow competitors, especially newcomers, during the games.

Jerry Harris of Jerry Harris Originals received the Distinguished Service Award. He has designed the group’s distinctive commemorative T-shirts for the last 21 years.

Richard Beall received the Susan Berry Memorial Award given in the district golf competition.

Velma Johnson won the Jesse Lanier Memorial Award, given in the district track and field competition.

Duane Chilton took home the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Betty Smith was named the Most Valuable Player Award winner.

And George Jernigan and Shelly Quarles were named Male and Female Athlete of the Year.

The 26th edition of the district games drew 517 competitors to the sports and games carnival that ran from March 16 to May 25 and featured 24 different activities for those 50 years and older.
