Whether throwing darts or tossing footballs or Frisbee, Velma Johnson and Bill Snow were the class of the day as the Northwest Louisiana District held its first individual competition of 2016 Monday at Diamond Jack’s Casino.
Each won their age bracket Gold Medal in darts and accuracy throws.
Johnson was tops among 60-69 year old women in accuracy throws in one of the closest decisions of the day. The top three finishers were divided by just three points. Snow dropped all men in the 75-79 age pairing.
In accuracy throws, contestants threw footballs and then the elusive and hard-to-control Frisbee from distances prescribed for their age bracket, at a ring 30 inches in diameter. The object was to get the implements through the ring. In darts, each player threw 10 darts from 12 feet to a regulation dart board.
The competition was held in conjunction with a Senior Health Fair cosponsored by the district and The Best of Times Magazine and The Best of Times radio broadcast. Gary Calligas, owner of The Best of Times LLC, won his age bracket Gold Medal as part of the accuracy throws.
Action in the sports and games carnival for men and women 50 years and older continues Saturday with the final rounds of the team event, Bean Bag Baseball, at the Bossier Knights of Columbus Hall.
